Attractions & culture

The Chaoshan Museum is located south of Nanbin Road in Haojiang District, Shantou City, on the cultural axis of CITIC Binhai New City in the Overseas Chinese Experimental Zone. It is backed by Bijia Mountain in Queshi Scenic Area and faces the inner bay of Shantou. It is the core building of the Chaoshan Historical and Cultural Expo Park. The expo center was designed by a team led by Professor He Jingtang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The architectural style integrates the characteristics of Chaoshan mountains and sea, the shape of the Red Head Boat, and elements of Chaoshan folk houses. The total building area is 70,000 square meters, with 5 floors above ground and 1 floor underground, a height of 46.2 meters, and a total investment of approximately 850 million yuan. The Chaoshan Museum began trial operations in February 2022, encompassing four public welfare exhibition halls: the Chaoshan Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition Hall, the Chaoshan Overseas Chinese History Museum, the Shantou City Planning Exhibition Hall, and the Shantou Art Museum. The museum collects artifacts such as inlaid porcelain, wood carving, stone carving, and colored painting, as well as historical artifacts, folk relics, and physical materials related to the production and life of overseas Chinese in the Chaoshan region. The museum's treasure, a large-scale Chinese painting scroll titled "Chaoshan Scenic Views," is 60 meters long and 1.4 meters wide, showcasing the natural scenery and cultural essence of Chaoshan. The exterior of the Chaoshan Museum is uniquely shaped, with one side resembling a rolling mountain ridge and the other like the bow of a ship sailing out to sea. The north and south sides feature Yingge Square, Binhai Square, and a sea-viewing platform respectively. Inside, the Red Head Boat shared hall runs east-west, forming a wave-shaped platform. The east side houses static themed exhibition halls, while the west side features dynamic public art exhibition spaces. The exhibition halls use multimedia and AR technology to showcase Chaoshan intangible cultural heritage, Chaoshan overseas Chinese culture, and historical artifacts. The Chaoshan Museum not only collects and displays Chaoshan artifacts but also serves as a venue for cultural exchange, educational activities, and urban public art events. It is the top choice for experiencing Chaoshan culture and urban tourism check-ins.
